What this actually means in practice
Footwear is sold as an article, but stocked as a matrix. One style in one colour exists in a run of sizes, and the shop’s real position is the grid: sixes and sevens gone by the second week, elevens still boxed at season end. A style with a broken size run is close to unsellable at full price, which is why markdowns come at the end of a season rather than when an item is individually slow. Boxes are stacked in a back store by article.
The grid has to exist in the software or the reorder is guesswork. Size and colour are variants of one product, so stock is held per cell and reorder tells you it is the eights you are short of, not the style.
