What this actually means in practice
A barcode is nothing more than a string of characters printed in a form a light can read, and a scanner is nothing more than a keyboard that types that string and presses Enter. That is why scan-to-add needs no driver and no port to configure: the counter screen receives the code, looks it up and adds the line. All of the intelligence is in the binding — which string means which sellable unit.
That binding is where shops go wrong. A code must identify a sellable unit, not a product in the abstract: a single sachet and a strip of twelve are two units, at two prices, consuming stock differently, and they need two codes. The same holds for sizes, colours and, where expiry is tracked, batches. Get it wrong once and the counter will be fast, cheerful and quietly wrong about your stock all year.
Barcodes also stop working, and a counter needs its answer ready in advance. Loose goods — rice, vegetables, sweets — have nothing to print on. Unbranded and second-hand stock arrives with no code at all. Labels tear, smudge and freeze off. The remedies are ordinary: print your own shelf labels for what you can, keep a short typed code for the rest, and allow search by name so no item is unbillable.

What it does not do
- · No weighing-scale integration. A price- or weight-embedded barcode printed by a shop scale is not decoded, so weighed goods are entered by quantity.
- · The scanner must present itself as a keyboard, which ordinary USB and Bluetooth retail scanners do. Serial-only readers and RFID are not supported.
- · The software does not police your binding. If two sellable units share one code, every report downstream inherits that error.

Do I need a particular scanner?

Half my stock has no barcode. Is this still worth doing?
